EATING ITSELF.
Six hundred and sixty million years after the Big Bang, there is a red dot. It looks, on the sky, exactly like a star. But it is putting out more energy than a billion suns from a region too small to resolve. No furnace known to physics burns that hot. The astronomers who found it were not looking for it at all - their survey was hunting the earliest galaxies, and they named it, fittingly, Mirage or Miracle.
On 12 August 2026, MIT announced the answer. The black hole is not the object's death. It is the object's engine.
A light powered by the thing light cannot escape.
Our picture of this object is evolving very rapidly. We think there is a central black hole that is about a million times as massive as the sun, embedded in a dense, metal-poor envelope of turbulent gas. The source is unresolved from above - a point-like cocoon, smaller than a few hundred light-years across.

If black hole stars are common - and the little red dots are everywhere JWST looks - then this is not a curiosity. It is a life stage. Every massive black hole in the modern universe, including the one sleeping at the center of the Milky Way, may have begun as one of these: a young black hole burning its way out of a womb of hydrogen, announcing itself as the brightest thing in the sky.
The Milky Way was four hundred million years old once. If this model holds, our galaxy spent its childhood as a red dot - and everything that followed, every star, every planet, every species, grew up in the light that darkness made.
They may govern when stars are able to form and when they cease forming, setting the course for everything that follows from star formation: the birth of planets, the rise of life, the emergence of species that may one day piece together this entire history.
